Docbook to Asciidoc

Simone Bordet
Hi,

I'd like get some information about the status of the Docbook to Asciidoc converter.
I really would like to port the documentation of CometD (now in Docbook format) to Asciidoc, possibly via Maven integration.

I spoke to Dan a few months ago, and he suggested to wait a while because the converter was being worked on, so here I am asking for status.

Thanks !

https://github.com/mojavelinux/docbookrx is the latest, I know nested lists need some love, but the rest of things should work. We don't have a maven migration though, so you'll need to run the ruby via cli to migrate the docs.

docbookrx is able to convert the bulk of DocBook content, but of course there are plenty of edge cases. The more documents we throw at it, the better it will become. I know there are a number of teams out there who are going through this migration, so you'll be in good company.

Nested list content still needs to be recursed. It's not a huge change, I just haven't gotten around to it yet. There are some hacks in place that need to be removed once it's implemented.

If something is out of sorts, feel free to file an issue or send a pull request with a fix. I'll review them as time permits.

I'll mention that as a general strategy, don't try to map everything 1:1. Instead, use the conversion as an opportunity to discard "noisy" markup, such as dedicated elements for every type of inline literal. My opinion is that many authors got carried away with overuse of DocBook tags, which in turn crushed motivation to actually maintain the docs. As my buddy Lincoln likes to say, "Keep it simple."

Good luck!
