Good thinking! If you file a feature request, we can get that done for 1.5.0 since I need to add some other config options as well.
I uncovered this with Lincoln. Extensions should have the ability to specifiy under which SafeMode they are to be run. If Asciidoctor isn't being run in the mode that is required by the extension it should either fail to register (probably resulting in an INFO message) or skip the extension
