In short: One's customization of, say, what a

<quote>

 at a certain depth gets turned into, goes (not into the Gentext files, but) into your customization layer--where "you create local versions of the generated text elements". But therefore, one's understanding of what pertinent options there are derives from knowing what pertinent "generated text elements" reside in your natural language's Gentext file.
