How to handle cross references when writing a book with multiple chapters but have separate pdfs for the chapters?

Hello,

I want to write a book with multiple chapters but have each chapter in its own pdf. To do this I am running asciidoctorpdf on each chapter individually. The problem is processing cross-references to other chapters. Could someone explain me how to write a book so that there is separate pdf for each chapter? Thanks.
