Hi!
I've just registered at this forum to ask a question, and I must say the user experience is not as smooth as I would like. I would love to kindly suggest https://www.discourse.org/ as an alternative to Nabble: I've used it extensively, as a forum participant, for Rust and Nixos, and to me the user experience seems to be far superior :) |

We just shifted our organisation (openEHR Foundation) to a publicly visible Discourse instance. I have to say, the experience is phenomenally good. The only slight downside is that threading doesn't quite work like old-school mailman or other older style forums. Instead, you need to get used to using keywords and smart quoting more.
Anyway, I'd vote for it. |

I undoubtedly agree that this software / platform is not the most convenient or elegant for hosting a mailinglist. The problems with it are well known. However, we explored Discourse in depth, even developing a migration script and making several attempts to migrate existing posts to it. In the end, I decided it's not the right platform. The main reason is that I cannot interface with it through e-mail. In other words, it doesn't act like a mailinglist. And since I engage with nearly every post, often using my phone, this is a showstopper for me. (See https://github.com/asciidoctor/asciidoctor/issues/1845#issuecomment-241179992) Don't get me wrong, I still want to migrate away from Nabble. But I want to migrate to proper mailinglist software that also features a web / forum gateway. What I have in mind is using the stack that the Fedora project uses. (See https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@.../). Previously, we didn't have the funds to do this. But I'm happy to say that thanks to the generous contributions to our OpenCollective (https://opencollective.com/asciidoctor), now we do! So let's call it a goal for 2020 to find a new home. I'll open an issue in asciidoctor/asciidoctor.org to discuss. Various docs suggest it can act like a mailing list.... Does it not function adequately? Or was it an unexplored or more recent configuration option? On Thu, 6 Feb 2020, 16:55 mojavelinux [via Asciidoctor :: Discussion], <[hidden email]> wrote:

The situation has definitely changed (probably from pressure from organizations that have recently adopted it). That didn't used to be the case. It's something we'll need to reconsider when we discuss it. I'm still more in favor of a real mailinglist, but if it can act like one and still be a web forum, we'll need to consider that too. Best, -Dan |

Yeah, I know at least one person in the Rust community who uses exclusively email for Discourse. I don’t claim that this is convenient, I don’t know, but this feature definitely exists, and I think Rust migrated from a mailing list to Discourse partially because it is compatible with ML workflow
