From the github/markup issue tracker: An attempt to define sane Macro standard for Markdown

I thought the issue included below is sort of ironic...looks like an effort to recreate AsciiDoc in Markdown. There's a good reason why AsciiDoc (and Asciidoctor) has the rich syntax and extension support that it does. If you have information, you need to have a way to represent it. Plain and simple.

I would like to present an idea that I have been thinking about for some time. I really feel it is inevitable that Markdown will start to spread outside of the developer community. I also feel that GitHub itself is a major influencer of Markdown apart from Mr. Gruber himself.

I'd like to offer an idea that could help mitigate the complexities of extending Markdown...
