Fellow community members,

It's with tremendous sadness that I must inform you that our fellow community member, creator of DocGist and friend Anders Nawroth {1} has passed away. I care very deeply about the lives of each and every community member, Anders included. The pain I feel right now runs equally deep.

I never lost hope that fortune would be on his side and he would overcome his illness.
Neither did Anders.

Anders loved ideas and was not afraid to explore them. He had such bravery that he was implementing some of his best ideas right up until the end {2}. His persistence to keep programming despite his struggle gave me hope and inspired me.

Anders had an important impact on our lives through his work, particularly AsciiDoc, Asciidoctor and DocGist. I am forever grateful for the parts of his life that he dedicated to open source. The work he did touched, and will continue to touch, a tremendous number of people. To us, he will always be an AsciiDoc and Asciidoctor hero.

Michael Hunger wrote a very heartfelt post about Anders on the Neo4j blog that celebrates his life and provides details of the challenges he had to fight.

I encourage you to think of Anders whenever you use DocGist, include a code snippet from a test suite or add a newline at the end of a sentence.
I know I certainly will.
I only wish I had a chance to know him better and to meet him in face-to-face.
I would have enjoyed sitting and listing to him play his jazz guitar {3}.

There will long be felt a void in the Asciidoctor project with Anders gone, but we will honor his memory by making sure his work is continued. May his spirit live on through his writing and his software in both the Neo4j and Asciidoctor communities.

Sincerely,

-Dan
