Best approach to add a new syntax highlighter

Hi,

I would like to get your opinion concerning the following point. What is the best way / most appropriate way to add a new "new syntax highlighter" to asciidoctor ?
a) Using extensions point - http://asciidoctor.org/docs/user-manual/#extension-points
b) Changing code of asciidoctor
They are pros/cons to follow approach A) or B) as modification will be available immediately with A) (at the condition that extension point = processor supports it !) vs approach B) as a snapshot of asciidoctor should be used to use the code added.
